EUROPEAN citizens in York have less than 100 days to apply to continue living in the city.

The deadline for the Government's EU Settlement Scheme is on June 30.

Only citizens of EU or EEA countries or Switzerland resident in the UK before December 31, 2020, are eligible.

Without settled or pre-settled status, they cannot, regardless of their age, continue to live, work, study or access free healthcare or other services in the UK after June 30.

Up to December 31, 7970 people had applied in York of which 4,100 secured settled status and 3,310 pre-settled status.

Cllr Darryl Smalley, executive member for culture, leisure and communities, said: “EU citizens are our friends, neighbours and work colleagues and are a part of what makes York such a special place to live. I would encourage all EU citizens, who have made York their home, to apply for the scheme and secure their rights as soon as possible.

"A dedicated community involvementoOfficer has been appointed by City of York Council, with a focus on supporting EU residents in the city through this difficult time.

“York is your home, and support is available locally with support and advice and help to complete the online application.”
