A THUNDERSTORM raged through the night in East Lancashire with humidity increasing.

As the Met Office issued yellow thunderstorm warnings until Thursday, residents of East Lancashire and even the whole country experienced a thunderstorm late into the night and early morning.

With the temperature still forecasted to be highs of 26 degrees in Blackburn with Darwen, more rain is set to appear yet.

The storm also caused some flooding in other areas as well as in East Lancashire, as Lancashire fire crews said they had received over 30 flooding related calls in one night.

Sarah Taylor from Blackburn said: "Last night was the best storm I’ve ever seen but it was unbelievably loud. I can’t believe my partner and our kids slept through the whole thing even with their windows open."

Many people reported seeing lightning happen before any thunder was even heard of a for a while.

Kelly Prince from Accrington said: "It started in Baxenden about 12 with lightning then it was a good two hours before thunder."

People captured images and videos of the thunderstorm as it woke them up from their sleep.

The thunderstorms are set to continue today with rain predicted from 10am till 12pm, and with more late into the night and tomorrow morning.

The fire and rescue service said it received more than 60 calls on Monday night into Tuesday morning and went out to more than 30 flooding-related incidents in Lancaster, Warton, Kirkham, Hesketh Bank and Tarleton.

A spokesman said: "In Lancaster, Burrow Beck has flooded around Lentworth Drive and Cranwell Avenue, and a number of properties have been affected.

"As a result, we are working with Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council to open a rest centre in Scotforth for those residents whose properties have been affected.

"There are a number of road closures in place because of the flooding and we ask people not to drive through flood water."

No injuries were reported.

A spokesman for the fire service said plans were under way to prepare for more storms expected on Tuesday evening.

Lancashire Police said officers were working with the fire service, ambulance and local authority to manage flooding in the Lentworth Drive area of Lancaster and urged people to avoid the area.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering most of the UK stretching until Thursday night.
