Police forces in England and Wales said there was a 25% reduction in crime across the nation during coronavirus lockdown- but does this statistic apply to Carlisle?

By using police date, we can compare crime rates in April 2020 and April 2019, to see how much crime levels have changed in Carlisle.

We can also spot differences in the type of crimes being committed.



The total number of crimes reported in Carlisle was shown to decrease during lockdown. In April 2020, a total of 897 crimes were committed compared a much higher number of 1262 in April 2019.

Violent and sexual offences were the most reported crimes in both April 2019 and 2020. However, the total number of these offences were lower this April (311) compared with 2019 (429).

Criminal damage and arson was also significantly lower in 2020 (77) compared to 2019 (240).

Anti-social behaviour reports remained consistently high, both in 2019 and during lockdown. However, there were more reports of this crime in April 2020 (286) than in 2019 (245).

As people were urged to stay at home, you might expect burglary rates to be lower- and this is the case for Carlisle. 26 burglary incidents were reported in 2020 compared with 37 in 2019.

Where are the crimes happening?

The most amount of crimes in Carlisle seem to happen in shopping areas and supermarkets. A total of 68 crimes were reported in these areas last April, compared to 34 in 2019.

As nightclubs were forced to close, it’s unsurprising that only 1 incident was reported in April 2020, compared to 20 in 2019.

Twickenham Court was the road with the most reported crimes in 2019, with 18 incidents reported that month. In 2020, the crime crown went to London Road, where 14 crimes were reported.
