GOVERNMENT has put £5 million towards the resurfacing works on Tadcaster Road.

The Department for Transport announced on Tuesday that it would be handing the cash to City of York Council for its maintenance of the road - one of the main routes into the city.

Work to resurface the road was already completed by the council at the end of May.

Cash for Tadcaster Road was included in Prime Minster Boris Johnson's announcement on Tuesday that the Government would put £100 million towards a raft of road schemes across the country.

Cllr Andy D'Agorne, executive member for transport, welcomed the funding, adding: "This is a key route into York, not only used for local journeys, but by millions of visitors and commuters every year - whether using our Park & Ride to access the city centre, or visiting York Racecourse.

“This additional funding will be used to carry out wholesale maintenance of Tadcaster Road, including road repairs and drainage, in order to complement works the council has previously carried out in recent years, for example, the replacement of ageing traffic lights, better cycling measures, junction improvements and resurfacing works. This will all help to improve traffic flow and ensure the city’s local road network is safe and more reliable for our residents.”
