A MAN who entered a hostel through the window during the lockdown and slashed another man with a knife has been jailed.

Rob Galley, prosecuting, said Brian Stanley Gregory, 37, had a box of white wine with him and said he was going to have a drink with one of the hostel's residents.

But within two minutes, a second resident heard the first crying "Stop stabbing me".

When police arrived, they found blood spattered on the floor, a bloodstained knife in a kitchen towel and the first resident lying with knife cuts on the ground.

Gregory, of Scargill Road, Harrogate, pleaded guilty to wounding and was jailed for two years at York Crown Court.

He has previous convictions for assaults and public order offences.

For Gregory, Richard Canning said he had to accept it was a sustained attack.

Gregory pleaded guilty on the basis he had not taken the knife to the hostel.

When he and the victim had argued, he had seen the knife in the kitchen, picked it up and "lashed out" with it.

Mr Galley said the victim refused to give a statement to the police about what had happened.

The second resident had been in his Harrogate room at 1.20pm on March 26, and heard his window "creak".

"The defendant climbed through the window," said Mr Galley.

He told the second resident he was going to the victim's room.

When the victim saw Gregory he appeared frightened.

Gregory told him: "You and me are going to have a drink" before telling the second resident to leave the room.

The second resident did so.

"Within two minutes he could hear words 'stop stabbing me', from (the victim)," said Mr Galley.

The second resident called the police.

"The police heard shouting coming from the room, there was clearly a disturbance going on," said the prosecutor.
