Some good news at last as Askham Bog has been spared from the property developers.
But I think it’s still too early to consider the matter fully closed: there remains the possibility, as has been noted, of legal challenges. Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be the first time a democratic decision was overturned by the courts.
Either way, this still doesn’t mark the end of the continuous assault on the greenbelt. Already other applications for new housing estates are underway, and without the defence of an ecological site being located nearby.
I hope all those who helped protect Askham Bog will recognise this was just a single victory in a never ending war, with many other areas of the city facing the same threat. It took a large community effort to keep these developers at bay we should stay united and help each other in future.
It could be any neighbourhood which gets targeted next, so let’s not allow resistance to over-development revert to being a parochial issue again.
