GAZEBOS have been put up in the grounds of York Crematorium to provide cover for the outdoor funeral services now being allowed by City of York Council.

The authority initially banned services and mourners from the crematorium in Bishopthorpe, because of concerns that they could risk spreading the coronavirus.

But after protests from York Central MP Rachael Maskell, and after a petition calling for the ban to be lifted was signed by more than 4,200 people, the council announced a relaxing of the restrictions earlier this week.

It said that while mourners could still not attend services inside the building, they could stand in the grounds for services - including the committal of the body if they wished - under a cover to be provided by the authority.
