A BUS driver in York has been nominated for a Community Pride Award after a selfless act helping out an injured pedestrian.

Anthony Guffick, born and bred in the city, has been a driver for First York buses for seven years.

On March 16, Anthony, 46, was working on a normal shift when he came across an injured pedestrian in the middle of the road along his route.

The man was laid in the middle of the road in Dodsworth Avenue with a head injury.

Acting quickly, Anthony decided to pull the bus to one side and offer his help to the man.

As the bus driver is first aid trained, he was able to carry out the correct measures while one of the passengers rang for the ambulance.

They stayed with the injured man until the paramedics arrived to help assist him. It turned out he had suffered a serious head injury.

One of the passengers on the bus Anthony was driving at the time shared a image of the bus driver supporting the injured man on Twitter, describing him as “wonderful.”

Anthony has been nominated for the award by his wife, Lynsey, as she feels his selfless act needs to be recognised.

Lynsey has nominated him in the Public Sector Hero category of the Community Pride Awards.

Lynsey said: “I think his selfless act deserves some praise.”

On his nomination, Anthony said: “I’m very pleased but quite shocked. It’s typical of my wife to do something like this without telling me.”

The couple live together in Acomb with their son, Connor.

The Community Pride Awards feature both individual and group categories in order to celebrate the dedicated fundraisers, public sector workers, teachers and community volunteers throughout the city.

The awards will again include the Public Sector Hero, sponsored by City of York Council. There will also be prizes for Spirit of Youth, Person of the Year, Sporting Hero, Good Neighbour of the Year, Best Community Project, School of the Year, Charity Fundraiser of the Year, Child of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and and Health Service Hero.

All nominees must live in, or contribute to the community within the City of York Council area.

Entries can be posted to York Community Pride Awards, The Press, 84-86 Walmgate, York YO1 9YN. Or you can submit your nomination on The Press website.

The closing date for entries is Friday, July 24. Nominations must include a supporting statement of no more than two sides of A4 with each entry and should include a photograph, which unfortunately we will be unable to return.
