The Premiership has been a disgrace so far during this national coronavirus crisis. Liverpool, Tottenham and Norwich furloughing their essential non-playing staff - who take 7-14 years to earn what a player earns in a week - and expecting the taxpayer to pick up the bill; clubs owned by some of the richest people on the planet abusing our government’s financial help. At least Liverpool have made a grovelling apology.

It just highlights all that has gone wrong with the alleged ‘beautiful game’ since this division was created. For me, it has ruined the national game. They take £250 million a year, per club, from television rights of £5 billion, plus gate, shirts and sponsorship. Because of this greed all the lower grass roots teams are perilously struggling, like York City who have had to furlough their staff, and Tadcaster Albion trying to survive.

It was unacceptable that the likes of legend Bobby Moore - the England captain who won the World Cup - and all his contemporaries, were paid so little for their talent: including our own York City heroes like Billy Fenton and all the York City team who took us so near to FA Cup Final glory. But football then had a soul that money can’t buy.
