A COUPLE form York celebrated 60 years of marriage with their Diamond wedding anniversary last week.

Peter and Shirley Skelton were married on April 2 1960 at Fulford Church.

The pair, who live in Huntington, met in 1956 at the YMCA Youth Club, Cumberland Street.

Peter was 19, and studying for his accountancy exams, while Shirley was 16 and worked in the Railway Offices.

Most Saturday nights they would travel to New Earswick Folk Hall dancing or to the Rialto Cinema in the city.

They were engaged on Christmas eve 1958, which was followed by Peter passing his finals in February 1959.

The couple’s anniversary celebrations have been put on hold due to the Coronavirus outbreak, as they were supposed to have an afternoon tea with their family.

However, the plans have been postponed and the celebrations will take place at a later date when it is suitable to do so.

They have two children together, Nigel, born in July 1963 and Karen, born in January 1966.

They have two grandchildren Joshua, aged 30 and Rebekah, 27.

Peter, 83, and Shirley, 79, are also set to become great grandparents in six weeks time.
