CITY of York Council is offering homeless people who are already in its resettlement scheme single rooms to stay in during the coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesperson said council staff are working hard with other organisations to help rough sleepers - and people staying in hostels - get the food and support they need.

Street walks are continuing - with the team speaking to rough sleepers who are still staying outdoors, offering them a flask with a hot drink, sandwiches and hot food later in the day.

Cllr Denise Craghill, executive member for housing, said: “It is incredibly important during this difficult period to support the most vulnerable in the city, including of course rough sleepers.

"That is why the council is continuing to support rough sleepers across the city, with offers of accommodation and food."

The city's homelessness and housing services are continuing to operate in the same way.

Rough sleepers can go to 63 Lawrence Street or call the team on 01904 416562.

Anyone concerned about becoming homeless or in need of advice can phone 01904 554500 or visit www.york.gov.uk/homelessness/housing-options.
