In Saturday’s Press John Norman asked why the Station Front revamp doesn’t include a bus station. He isn’t the only one asking. York Bus Forum have been pressing for a better interchange, and have worked up some proposals too.
The biggest problem is blinkered thinking in the Department for Transport.
Network Rail and LNER own much of the land, so this project cannot go ahead without their agreement. They want compensation for loss of long-stay car parking revenue, which means a big slice of the budget has to be spent on a new multi-storey car park, not better bus facilities.
We think more use of Park & Ride is an obviously better alternative.
Network Rail and LNER are both government owned. In effect, the DfT are insisting on this irrational outcome.
