THE model of a steam locomotive has been tested and is ready for action in line with the re-opening of a North Yorkshire country house.

The model of the Royal Scot was tested on the miniature railway at Newby Hall and Gardens near Ripon.

The miniature railway, which was originally opened by Lord Mountbatten in 1970, carries Newby’s visitors through the 25 acres of gardens.

The miniature Royal Scot, which has been restored over the last few years, was tested by Matt Grey and will be running services along the miniature railway on Sundays and bank holidays.

The Royal Scot was an express passenger train that was active from 1927 until 2003.

The locomotive ran daily services between London Euston and Glasgow Central stations, along the West Coast Main Line.

Parts of Newby Hall and Gardens is set to open to the public on April 1, subject to developments of the coronavirus outbreak.

The gardens, adventure playground, miniature train and railway shop are set to open as planned, but they ask that advance bookings are made to avoid the use of cash or card payment.

Although these areas will remain open, extra measures will be in place physical barriers as a reminder of the social distancing issue.

As a precautionary measure, the house will remain closed until further notice to protect the health and wellbeing of staff and visitors.

Events such as Tractor Fest 2020, Enchanted Wood, and Sports Cars in the Park have been rescheduled or cancelled.
