A YORK couple, who met as teenagers, will celebrate 70-years since they were married today.
Harry and Ann Stirk met at the old Priory Youth Club in Nunnery Lane in their younger years.
They began to go to local dances together, before becoming a couple and eventually marrying at Heworth Church on March 18 1950.
Harry, 94, began work as an apprentice joiner at Belts in York, before moving on to Fairweathers, where he worked for his uncle.
Before his retirement, he also worked at St John’s College before it became St John’s University.
Ann, 90, worked at Rowntree’s as a comptometer operator, later working at Rose & Co decorating suppliers and Shepherd Building Group.
They have lived in York all their lives and Harry still enjoys raising plants for the garden and helping family members with do-it-yourself projects, though recently more in an advisory role.
Birdwatching is a favourite pastime for them both.
The couple have a son, Michael, and daughter, Helen, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
They plan to celebrate their Platinum wedding anniversary with a weekend away with family.
