TWO teenagers have been locked up for a burglary during which they hit a mother on the head with a hammer.

The 15-year-old and 16-year-old boys also had a knife and screwdriver and wore masks when they staged a night raid on the family home on Friday, December 13, a crown court heard.

Police alerted by the family searched the area and arrested them.

The younger boy was locked up for three years at Teesside Crown Court. The older was given a two-year detention and training order. Both admitted aggravated burglary and cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Police said the 33-year-old mother opened her Northallerton door on hearing a knock and followed her dog outside. There she was hit on the head.

Investigating Officer DC Karen Barugh, of North Yorkshire Police CID, said: “This was a truly horrifying ordeal for both the victim and her 16-year-old son who woke up to discover his mother covered in blood and being chased into their home by two masked males.

“I would like to praise the family for their bravery throughout the investigation.”
