STORM Dennis is battering North Yorkshire and York with winds currently gusting at nearly 50 mphand heavy rain.

It has closed roads and bridges and raised river levels.

The River Ouse is rising and may not peak until Tuesday. It is widely expected to exceed river levels during the 2015 floods.

This evening the Environment Agency extended flood alerts and flood warnings so that they now cover all of the Rivers Nidd, Wharfe, Swale and Ure.

Car parks near the River Ouse have been closed and flood defences including floodgates remain in place from earlier this week and the Foss Barrier is operating.

The Environment Agency has not said when it expects the river to peak or how it will be.

But York Central Rachael Maskell  tweeted after speaking to residents and the agency that she wasn't expecting the peak until 8pm on Tuesday night.
