FIREFIGHTERS have rescued people stranded on their house boats near York after the River Ouse rose to its highest levels in more than four years.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said crews from York, Selby and Malton used two boats to help people leave five boats moored to the flooded bank at Ferry Lane, Bishopthorpe.

The operation lasted for most of today and finished at about 4.30pm.

Station manager Bob Hoskins tweeted that he had worked with crews to 'assist people in Bishopthorpe who live on the River Ouse, welfare visits & securing boats which have drifted in the floods.'
