A WOMAN in her 70s was cut free from a car and taken to hospital after it crashed into a tree near York.

The collision happened at around 10.35pm on Monday on the A59 at Upper Poppleton.

The road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Police and paramedics attended the scene of the crash, along with two crews from Acomb Fire Station.

North Yorkshire Police said a woman in her 70s was trapped in the car.

Crews used hydraulic cutting gear to free the woman and handed her into the care of paramedics.

@AcombOnCall, the Twitter account for on call firefighters based in Acomb, tweeted that the woman was said to be suffering from suspected back and pelvic injuries.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said one patient was taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

The A59 was reopened by 1.23am, around three hours after the incident.
