A DRIVER has been arrested after a police pursuit on Tuesday which ended in a York village.

Sergeant Paul Cording, of North Yorkshire Police, said he received a report from Durham Constabulary about a driver wanted for an alleged offence.

The driver initially failed to stop on the A1 at Allerton Park, Sgt Cording added.

Police used tactical pursuit and containment tactics to stop the car on Station Road in Upper Poppleton near the level crossing barriers.

The incident happened shortly after midday on Tuesday.

A 27-year-old man from Durham has been arrested on suspicion of failure to stop, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, affray, driving whilst unfit through drink, and trespassing in proximity of railway / on railway property.

He remains in custody.

Several villagers told The Press they saw a police helicopter hovering over the village at the time of the incident, and heavy police activity on the ground.

One eyewitness said Station Road near the level crossing was shut by police after the incident.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said services on the York-Harrogate line were stopped after the incident but resumed within 25 minutes.
