FREYA Whiteside became the North of England Under-16 cyclo-cross champion as East Bradford Cycling Club enjoyed a successful competition.

Whiteside was the star performer for the club’s newly-sponsored East Bradford Race Team (EBRT).

In muddy, sticky conditions at the Burnley venue, she came in a clear winner, one minute and six seconds ahead of the second-placed finisher Matilda McKibben (Cycle Sport Pendle).

Despite it only being halfway through the season, she already has three wins, two second places and five other top ten placings.

These came on top of two wins and two seconds out of four events in the Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross Association Summer series.

Not to be outdone, U14 star Florence Greenhalgh came second in her event, only 14 seconds down.

U14 Patrick Casey held second place for most of his boys race, only dropping to third on the last lap.

In the U16s, EBRT members Callum Watson, Bjorn Koerdt and Daniel Wood finished third, fourth and fifth with only 12 seconds covering them.

Holding up the honour of senior members, East Bradford CC’s John Elwell was fifth in the Male Vet 50 age group, while Rachel Kendrick was the third woman home in the same age group.

Ryan Middlemiss (EBRT) was seventh in the U23s.

Senior club coach Mandy Parker said: “This season, with 12 wins, 13 seconds, 18 thirds and 56 other top 10s between them, East Bradford’s name is firmly on the cyclo-cross map.”

Elsewhere, former Bingley resident Rob Jebb battled through a field of over 50 racers to win the Vet 40 men’s race for Hope Factory Racing in a time of 42:13, half a minute quicker than his closest rival, in the four challenging laps.

Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic RC rider Dexter Leeming-Sykes finished third in the junior men’s event as he was nearly two minutes behind the victor with a time of 47:47.

In the Senior & Junior women’s race, Eldwick’s Sophie Thackray completed her laps in the third quickest time of 42:44 for SCOTT racing.

That saw her finished the highest placed U23 rider.
