THE River Ouse in York is at its peak and is expected to fall slowly during the rest of this afternoon.

The current level in the centre of the city is 3.07 metres or just over 10 feet.

But with heavy rain forecast overnight and tomorrow, the city remains on flood warning, the only place in the country apart from Chew Magna south of Bristol.

Several other areas including the lower River Nidd and the River Ouse south of York are on flood alert, the lowest form of warning.

The Foss Barrier was lowered yesterday evening and flood gates including the Lendal Bridge floodgate were closed at the same time.
