A WITNESS appeal has been launched following the death of a cyclist in the early hours today.

Police were called to a fatal collision in York involving a cyclist and a car which occurred just before 1am this morning (Sunday) in Stockton Lane, heading away from the city.

North Yorkshire Police said it involved a black Toyota Auris and a black and gold trim bicycle.

The spokesman for the force added: “Sadly, the cyclist, a 29-year-old local man, died at the scene. A man has been arrested in relation to causing death by driving without due care and attention.”

The arrested man has been released under investigation, the force confirmed.

It is urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the vehicles that night before it happened, or has any dash-camera footage that could help the investigation, to get in touch.

Earlier today the force said: "We attended a collision between a car and a cyclist just after 2 am. The cyclist died shortly after, the family has been informed. The driver of the car was arrested."

The road was closed for some time and reopened this morning.
