North Yorkshire Police said that they were called to the scene on the A168, near Grafton, at 10.15am.

In a statement, the force said: "A black Mercedes saloon, travelling southbound, collided with a lorry on the A168 near Grafton that was travelling north.

"Ambulance crews also attended. Sadly the Mercedes driver, believed to be a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The lorry driver was not seriously hurt."

The A168 is currently shut between Boroughbridge and Allerton Park to allow the police to investigate. The force added that the road is likely to remain shut for some time.

Motorists are urged to use an alternative route.
