A YORK MP has contacted the Post Office to request a full update and meeting on when they will reinstate their Woodthorpe branch, which closed earlier this week.

The branch on Moorcroft Road in Woodthorpe has closed temporarily “following the withdrawal of premises for post office use,” a Post Office spokesperson said.

A member of staff at Woodthorpe Post Office said the shop closed on Tuesday but it had stopped providing post office services on Monday.

Julian Sturdy, MP for York Outer, is now seeking a meeting with the Post Office. He said: “The closure of this important local service will be of concern to local residents, especially given how sudden this announcement was.

“I have requested the Post Office meet with me to explain the situation, and clarify what steps they are taking to ensure a normal Post Office service is reinstated for Woodthorpe as soon as possible.

“I would encourage any residents who have concerns about this to get in touch with me, so I can ensure the Post Office understand local feeling on the matter.”

A statement on the Post Office website states: “We are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community. In exploring this, it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office Limited.

“Future provision will reflect customer numbers and usage and we may take the opportunity to establish an alternative type of service. This may be a new style branch which run alongside an established retail shop.”
