A NEW wing will be built at a York primary school during the May half term break.

Pupils and staff at Badger Hill Primary School, next to Archbishop Holgate’s CE School off Hull Road, will see a new four-classroom wing built on grass next to the existing school.

The £2.7million project also includes a main hall, kitchen, staff room, library, reception area, cloakrooms, toilets and offices.

Head teacher Vicky Whittingham said: “We are all looking forward to this next phase of the project. After more than a year of just looking at plans for the school finally being able to see it in place when we come back from half term is really exciting.”

Construction has taken place off-site and contractors Portakabin will install the building while pupils are on holiday.

Part of the existing school building will be refurbished under the scheme and connected to the new wing. The new building will be fitted out throughout the rest of the term and over the summer holidays, ready to open to pupils in September.

The existing 1960s block will then be demolished to make way for a new playground.

Traffic restrictions will be put in place on Sussex Road from May 28 to June 3 so the buildings can be delivered and a spokesman for the school said they “greatly appreciate the understanding and support” of the community while the work is carried out.

Planning permission for the project was granted last November and the scheme is being funded by the Department for Education.

Nick Griffin, general manager at Portakabin, said: “Thanks to the speed of modular construction, Portakabin is able to design, manufacture and install a brand new and completely permanent primary school building by September.”
