POLICE have reassured residents as the investigation into a serious sexual assault in York last week continues.
The Press reported On May 7 that a woman was attacked by a man in the Nunnery Lane area.
A cordon was put in place on a grassed area off Nunnery Lane to allow officers to examine the scene, and detectives carried out extensive inquiries, including checks of CCTV.
DS Mark Jackson, of the Major Investigation Team, said: "It's completely understandable that residents are concerned following this very serious incident. However, I'd like to reassure the community that we have arrested a man - who does not live in the York area - and that extensive enquiries are ongoing.
"The man has been released on bail while the investigation continues. I can also say that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."
Following the incident, officers and PCSOs from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team have been active in the Nunnery Lane area, supporting the local community and dealing with any concerns.
DS Jackson added: "We have had a good response to our appeal for information from members of the public, and I would like to thank people for their assistance."
