Commuters are having to cope with major rush hour delays both in and outside York tonight (Wednesday).
Five vehicles have crashed into each other on the A1237 Outer Ring Road, causing queues from north of the B1224 Wetherby Road roundabout to its junction with the A64 at Copmanthorpe.
All three emergency services are dealing with the incident, and part of the Outer Ring Road is believed to be shut.
Inside York, all roads around the racecourse, particularly Tadcaster Road, are busy as thousands of racegoers leave Knavesmire on their way to the city centre or to head homewards.
A broken down vehicle near the junction of Tadcaster Road and St Helen's Road added to the traffic jams.
Today is the opening day of the York racing season.
