YORK workers have been urged to set savings goals as the scale of non-saving is revealed.

Analysis by Yorkshire Building Society shows the number of people working in Yorkshire and Humber who are not saving is enough to fill Bootham Crescent, the home of York City FC, more than 78 times over.

Research shows that 616, 217 workers in the region, 24 per cent, do not save regularly and the UK's saving to income ratio is at its lowest level since 1963.

YBS spokeswoman Tanya Jackson said: "We know saving can be difficult. Juggling the demands of a busy life can limit how much we put away, but with 24 per cent of workers not saving at all it is clear this is a wide-scale issue."

YBS is now urging the Government and employers to do more to help, including incentivising workplace saving.
