DEMOLITION work is underway at a former car park in York's Piccadilly to pave the way for a new hotel.
A new 143-bedroom hotel and a six-storey apartment block is set to be built opposite Spark:York after plans were given the green light earlier this year.
The former Infinity Motorcycles shop and car park are being demolished and a Hampton By Hilton hotel will be built in its place.
A spokesman for developers Avantis said they were delighted to be on site, 'supported by competent and highly experienced site managers and demolition contractors who are respectful of public disruption, access and most importantly the safety of passers-by and workers on neighbouring sites.'
He said that imminent remedial works were planned after demolition to remove below ground infrastructure and contaminants associated with the historical use as a car dealership and garage.
"A leading environmental consultancy is working collaboratively with YAT (York Archaeological Trust) and the local Environment Agency to ensure all works are carried out respectfully, protecting archaeological and environmental interests," he said.
"This exciting scheme will not only revitalise the fabric of Piccadilly but also bring true environmental benefits."
Councillors were in favour of the scheme earlier this year although some raised concerns about the design of the building, which Cllr Andy D’Agorne called “unimaginative”.
But Philip Holmes, speaking on behalf of the applicant, said the scheme would “bring vitality to this part of the city centre,' and a a spokesman for Avantis said they had worked hard on the plans.
He said: “Our professional team have worked tirelessly to improve the previous consented scheme whilst respecting the sensitive nature of the historical surroundings.
"The scheme will bring significant, local economic benefits to a site that had little other use than as a carpark.”
