HEAR YE! Hear ye! York has an official town crier again.

The last bellman, John Redpath, retired in 2007, since when there has been no one to make proclamations. Step forward Ben Fry, former Leeds United match day host and local radio presenter. Standing on the Mansion House steps in full regalia he issued his first proclamation.

“Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! From this day forward, Friday 10th of May, York has a new bellman with plenty to say.

“A new town crier to make proclamations, to inform and promote about York’s destinations.”

Mr Fry promises to be a very modern town crier - despite his costume. As well as making proclamations, he’ll be sending out messages on social media. “We believe this is the first time any city has had a town crier whose messages could be shared on Twitter and Facebook,” said Sheriff of York Verna Campbell, who championed the return of a town crier for York.
