THE number of fires attended by crews in North Yorkshire rose by more than twice the national average last year.

Figures which have been released by the Government showed blazes attended by crews across England rose by just under five per cent in the 12 months to December 2018 - from 170,007 to 177,844.

However, the figures showed North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended 2,074 fires, which was up 12 per cent from 1,852 in the previous year.

The total number of incidents attended by crews in North Yorkshire also rose by about nine per cent, from 6,575 to 7,157.

The number of false alarms attended by firefighters in the region also rose by just under nine per cent, from 3,047 to 3,315.

However, while the number of ‘good intent’ false alarms rose by 20 per cent from 743 to 896, the figures showed the number of malicious false alarms dropped in the same period - by just one, from 88 to 87.

The figures also revealed the number of call-outs to deal with vehicles in the region rose by 22 per cent, from 230 to 281, while the number of house fires dropped about five per cent from 359 to 340.
