A FATHER and son have both been jailed for an “appalling piece of public disorder” at a wake.

After watching CCTV of the attack outside Tang Hall Working Men’s Club, Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said he lost count of the number of times Ian Willis and Harrison Patrick Jamie Willis hit the victim as they aimed punches at his head.

Ian Willis had also kicked him a number of times as the victim lay on the ground late on November 6.

The judge said it was an “appalling piece of public disorder” during which the victim had never thrown a single punch throughout what was going on.

He added: “Anyone seeing what I have just seen would be forced to the conclusion that appropriate punishment could only be achieved by immediate imprisonment."

Ian Willis, 48, and his son Harrison, 22, both of Cranbrook Road, Acomb, each pleaded guilty to affray. Each was jailed for 10 months at York Crown Court.

For them, Imran Khan said they had been attending the wake of a family friend. Ian Willis’ wife had fallen during the incident and suffered a broken elbow.

The defence barrister made allegations about the victim’s conduct.

Rob Galley, prosecuting, told the court police had been called half an hour earlier because of an incident that had happened inside the club.

“I am not in a position to determine what happened inside – it is not clear from the CCTV,” the judge told the father and son.

“This is an incident that should have stopped when police had come earlier. For some reason it flared up again and lasted for a protracted period.”

Mr Khan said the second incident occurred as everyone was leaving and getting into their cars.

“This is an isolated incident which is unlikely to be repeated,” he said. “They are genuinely remorseful about what happened. They are ashamed of their behaviour.”

Both father and son were hard working men, the court heard.
