A CAFE targeted by burglars is back on its feet thanks to a fundraising campaign - which raised £400 in just two hours.

The Random Encounter Gaming Cafe and Bar, in Gillygate, York, was raided at around 11.30pm on Saturday, April 27.

Co-owner Wes Hall said the thieves stole the till as well as electronic items, to a value of £550.

He said staff members had only just locked up about 20 minutes after the café’s karaoke night had ended when the burglary happened.

However the shop, which originally opened through crowd funding, created a GoFundMe page to try to cover the cost of the till system - which surpassed its target in a day.

Wes said: "After the weekend, once it had really sunk in what we had lost, we started to think about setting up a GoFundMe page, simply to cover the cost of our till system which is about £400.

“It took us a couple of days to decide to actually go for it, it’s a hard decision to make to ask for donations, especially as our cafe was originally crowd funded to open in 2017.

“However, we reached our £400 target in just over two hours, which is just amazing.

“We are currently at £669, and with the extra money we plan to invest in some better security to help prevent this happening again.

“The response from our customers has been incredible. It makes me emotional just thinking about it. We have read through many of the comments on the fundraising page, as well as our social media, and it has been so heart-warming.

“When we first set out to make this cafe, we really wanted to build a community, and a safe space for people to come, relax and play some games. And I feel like in a way, this shows that we have achieved that. We’re so thankful to all our customers.”

North Yorkshire police said a 25-year-old man has been charged with burglary.
