THE final results of the local elections for City of York Council are in - and the Conservatives have suffered heavy losses.
Just two Conservative councillors were elected - Cllr Paul Doughty held his seat in Strensall ward and new councillor Martin Rowley took one of the seats in Osbaldwick and Derwent ward.
The Conservatives, who had been in a coalition administration with the Liberal Democrats for the past four years and went into the election with 10 councillors, also lost all three seats they had previously held in Rawcliffe and Clifton Without ward.
The Liberal Democrats were the big winners of the day, ending up with 21 councillors - an increase on their previous 11 seats.
But they have not gained quite enough councillors to achieve the required majority of 24.
Talks over a possible coalition with another group are expected to take place.
Labour also gained some ground and ended the day with 17 seats.
Ahead of the election, Labour had 13 councillors.
The Green Party retained their four seats and three independent councillors were also elected.
The final results were: Liberal Democrats 21, Labour 17, Conservatives 2, Green Party 4, independents 3.
