MORE than 50 researchers from York’s two universities will be off to the pub later this month - to take part in a three-day international science festival.

The Pint of Science Festival, which runs from May 20 to May 22, will see scientists from the University of York and York St John University speaking about their research in several city pubs, including Pivni, The Golden Fleece, The Winning Post, The Fulford Arms, Micklegate Social and Walmgate Ale House.

There will be a selection of topics throughout the event, including the science of heavy metal, the quantum world we live in, the history of winemaking with ancient DNA, searching for invertebrates in French Guiana, the silent saboteur of plastic and whether sitting is killing you.

A spokesman for the festival said: “Communicating science to the public is of ever-increasingly importance, especially in the face of modern global challenges like climate change.

“The Pint of Science Festival helps bridge the gap between scientists and the public, making science accessible to everyone and shattering images of mad scientists locked away in laboratories conducting mysterious experiments.”
