A MAN has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries - and several others have been hurt - in a crash involving a lorry and a car on the A64 near York.

The collision happened between Copmanthorpe and Bilbrough at around 1.10pm today (Tuesday). 

The road reopened at 17.45pm. 

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a serious road collision on the A64 at Copmanthorpe, York.

"The incident happened at around 1.10pm on the slip road towards Leeds and involved an Artic lorry and a car.

"A man has been airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with injuries believed to be serious but not life threatening.

"A number of other people have been taken to York Hospital by road ambulance with serious but not life threatening injuries.

"Drivers are urged the avoid the area as the road is still shut."

Traffic is currently unable to exit or enter the A64 Westbound from the A1237 roundabout.

In a statement, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "Crews from Acomb, Huntington, Tadcaster and York have extricated two casualties from a two vehicle road traffic collision involving a heavy goods vehicle and car.

"One male, who was a rear passenger in the car, was transported to hospital via air ambulance while the driver was transported to hospital via road. Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment, sharps kit and small tools."
