The spokeswoman said two fire crews from Acomb and the fire service's boat from York were called to the scene by North Yorkshire Police.
A police spokesman said officers were called to Terry Avenue at 7.44am by a member of the public, and confirmed a woman's body had been recovered from the river at about 8am.
He said: "We are in the process of trying to identify the woman at this point, which could take some time.
"We think it is an elederly woman's body, but we are still in the process of identification. Her death is not currently being treated as suspicious, and the woman has not been formally identified yet."
Crime scene investigators are currently at the scene, but police said they were due to leave this morning.
This is the fifth body to be recovered from the river in the last three weeks.
The Press reported earlier this week that the parents of the third person to die, Sonny Ferry, 19, from Rutland, decided to launch an appeal to buy a new craft for York Rescue Boat, which will feature high-tech new kit such as 3D sonar and radio communications equipment.
The appeal has won the backing of other families who have lost loved ones through drowning.
More to follow.
