A YORK charity that supports the city’s elderly has celebrated a milestone anniversary of a flagship service with a shop revamp.

Age UK York, which is based in Walmgate, where its shop has just had a makeover, launched information service First Call in April 2009, with support from City of York Council.

Since then, it has received more than 17,000 enquiries and the team helps around 60 people every week.

Most of its calls come from older people, but many come from friends, relatives and other organisations.

Requests cover a wide range of topics, from finding out about local social activities or finding a chiropodist that will do home visits, to which benefits someone is entitled to.

Age UK York chief officer Sally Hutchinson said: “Over the last 10 years First Call has helped many,

many thousands of people with vital information and support.

“I am so proud to have been involved in the development of such a valuable service for the older people of York.”
