CUTE. A smart package of dance, great tunes and bags of personality from Strictly's Aljaz Skorjanec and Janette Manrara.

After their success touring to keep Fred Astaire’s flame alive, this new show has hit on a commercially astute idea: why not dance to much-loved film music? And so on and so on, endlessly.

In more cynical hands, this could be populist nonsense, but Aljaz and Janette have good taste. They have assembled a highly energetic, talented band of nine young dancers and built a show that revels in this versatility. Sixteen shows into a tightly packed tour they were truly on song.

While never reckless, the show cleverly updates some old musical chestnuts. Dance fans could take their fill on a well-judged blend of modern, ballroom, paso doble, salsa, disco and cha-cha-cha moves. While the opening and closing The Greatest Showman songs may have stretched the memories of older audience members, for the most part the choices were assured.

All eyes turned to the stars, and the scripted banter went down well. Aljaz is a born showman, flirty and, somewhat bizarrely, camping it up a storm. He remembered audience members who had tweeted earlier and made the night magical for some of his primary age fanbase. Janette was pocket-sized charm, and the real-life pair make a strong double act.

The modern mash-up of Singin' In The Rain was less successful but showed bravura, and the cheeky Cabaret felt out of place. While the show ebbed slightly during the romantic moments, the range of styles and artistry was stunning throughout. Particular mention goes to the dynamic singing of Damien Edwards and Janine Johnson, making a name for herself as a formidable voice in the Ruby Turner mould. Aljaz revelled in the Bond sequence, while Janette looked dangerously comfortable in the Tarantino inspired Bang Bang.

While classics from films such as Casablanca rushed by, the performers were at their best on the showstoppers, with You Can’t Stop The Beat from Hairspray irresistible.
