A WOMAN whose body was recovered from the River Ouse in York city centre has been identified by police.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police were called to reports from a member of the public after a body was spotted in the river shortly before 7am on Friday, April 12.
Following the reports, there was a large emergency services presence in the area with Skeldergate, North Street and Ouse Bridge closed off while the body was recovered.
Police later issued an appeal in a bid to identify the woman.
On Saturday afternoon a North Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed that officers had now spoken to the woman's family.
He said: "Officers investigating the identity of a woman whose body was found under Ouse Bridge in York have spoken to her next of kin.
"We are not yet in a position to formally identify the woman."
