THE former toilet block in St Sampson’s Square is being demolished - at a cost of nearly £63,000.

Councillors agreed plans to remove the structure at a meeting last April and a spokesman for City of York Council said when the work is complete, the space will become part of the square and used for public space.

A report prepared for the meeting last year, when the decision to remove the fountain on Parliament Street was also agreed, says the toilets have not been in use since 2010.

It adds: “Its removal will enable the square to be better used offering increased space for the temporary cultural, recreational and retail events that happen in the city. The toilet block does not complement the historic setting of St Sampson’s Square.”

At the end of 2018 the council spent £70,000 on refurbishing the toilets in Silver Street and Coppergate.

The fountain was demolished last May.
