Thank goodness something still works in this country and can bind us all together as we endure Westminster giving the nation a nervous breakdown.

I’m referring to the excellence of British television production.

Here are some examples.

Drama: in the last few days alone we’ve seen BBC’s gripping drama - Line Of Duty - which pulled in eight million viewers, plus the new Victoria series with Jenna Coleman; The Bay (ITV); Mother Father Son (BBC); and the charming Durrells (ITV).

Entertainment: The Voice (ITV); and Britain’s Got Talent (ITV) with 7.4 million viewers.

Documentary: The Murder Of Jill Dando (BBC); The Yorkshire Ripper Files (BBC Four), which included some of my original footage; and The Brexit Storm (BBC) with Laura Kuenssberg.

Wildlife: Our Planet - a mega Netflix series narrated by David Attenborough.

Sport: Formula 1 from Bahrain on C4 (my son films with this team) introducing a new star commentator - Billy Monger - a double amputee after a Formula 4 crash; The Grand National (ITV); the FA Cup semi-final (BBC) and the Boat Race (BBC).

The quality of British TV must contribute to our mental well-being and sanity.

It grieves me, however, that in Yorkshire BBC and ITV are still transmitting in fuzzy standard definition.

Some downmarket Freeview channels need removing and more 4K programmes should be shot and transmitted.
