FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire to some rubbish near York's Knavesmire, with police saying it could have damaged the racecourse concourse had they not spotted it when they did.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a small amount of rubbish on fire near the Knavesmire at 11.10pm last night (April 9).
"It was believed to have been caused deliberately" a spokeswoman for the fire service said.
Firefighters put out the fire using a hose reel jet.
North Yorkshire Police's York South team wrote on Twitter: "How can anyone do this just for fun? It was lucky we saw this when we did before damage was caused to the racecourse concourse. Just for fun?.....I don't think so!"
