THERE is still time to nominate the city’s sporting heroes for the 2019 Active York Sports Awards.

The popular awards, organised by Active York, the city’s sport and active leisure partnership which encourages people to be more active more often, are now in their sixth year.

Nominations are being sought across 12 categories ahead of an awards ceremony at the University of York on Wednesday, June 26. The closing date for nominations is Monday, April 15.

Keith Morris, chair of Active York, said: “The Active York Sports Awards, which are now in their sixth year, are a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of those involved in sport and activity in the city.

“I have been involved with the awards since they started and we know there are some really great initiatives and successes taking place around the city and we are keen that these receive the recognition they deserve.

“We are proud that the awards have such a community focus and, as well as recognising the many talented individuals and teams, they give recognition to the many volunteers, schools and workplaces that continually make such a huge contribution to drive activity across the city.”

In a change this year, the categories have been split into three sections: Young achievers (under-18s) - Young Sportsperson, Young Disabled Sportsperson and Junior Team/Club Award; Senior achievers (over-18s) - Student Sportsperson, Sportsperson, Disabled Sportsperson and Team/Club Award; Special contribution - Active School of the Year, Active in York Award, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award.

To be eligible for nomination for any Active York Sports Award, people must have been born in, live, attend school or train or play sport within City of York Council’s boundaries.

There is a period of qualification, a minimum of a nine-month period from February 2018 to February 2019.

The awards will be judged by members of the Active York board, which includes sporting partners from across the city.
