Public transport should be the concern of any local authority.

It is no coincidence that it is the place with the best public transport system which always gets the “happiest city” accolade.

This is a subject which was relevant to us when we were recently without a car.

There is no bus from our village to either the hospital or to any local shopping centre.

York Wheels and Dial-a-Ride do a magnificent job, but it is limited.

There is a good shopping centre at Clifton Moor, with an excellent bus service to town with a stop directly outside York Hospital.

We have the No 19 bus connecting the village to town via a tortuous route stopping many times along its 35-minute journey.

A taxi from our village to Clifton Moor costs £8 each way.

To add an extra stop at Clifton Moor to the No 19 bus route would not add more than a minute or two to its journey time.

Yet attempts to interest City of York Council in this fall on deaf ears.

We are told it is “not on”.
