POLICE say a body recovered yesterday from York's River Foss is that of missing York man, Lee Evennett.

North Yorkshire Police said tonight that Lee, 48, was reported missing on March 29.

"His family are being supported by officers," said a force spokeswoman.

"At this time, there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death."

A huge emergency operation was launched after a member of the public called police at 4.30pm yesterday to say they had seen a body in the River Foss near Fishergate.

At least six police vans were parked in Fishergate and on Castle Mills Bridge, with the footpath blocked to pedestrians.

A fire engine and ambulance also at the scene, and a fire rescue boat could be seen in the water in the Foss Basin, just upstream of the Foss Barrier and Pumping Station.

North Yorkshire Police said last night that police, fire and rescue services and the Yorkshire and Humberside Underwater Search Unit had been working together to recover the body from the water, and a force spokesman confirmed this morning that a body had been recovered.
