THIS is the notice of administration which spells the end of a York restaurant, less than a year after it opened.

The Cat’s Pyjamas, an Indian street kitchen and craft beer restaurant, situated in Cumberland Street, next door to the Grand Opera House, has closed down after its parent company went into administration.

The notice in the window says: "Notice of Administration. This restaurant is now closed.”

It goes on to say Meow Hospitality Limited T/A The Cat’s Pyjamas, entered administration on Monday March 25, and Gareth James Lewis, of Lewis Business Recovery and Insolvency, has been appointed as the administrator of the company with immediate effect.

It says all creditors and suppliers should contact Lewis.

The Press approached the administrators for comment but was told that Gareth Lewis was the only person able to comment, and he was away on holiday.

The newspaper also contacted the businesswoman behind The Cat’s Pyjamas, Alison White, from Leeds, but she declined to comment at this stage, saying she would speak out later on about what had happened and gone wrong.

The Press reported last April how Alison had chosen York as the destination for her third restaurant - with the first two in Headingley and Leeds - after visiting York as a child and having fond memories, particularly of going to The York Dungeon and Grand Opera House, which were both going to be the restaurant’s new next door neighbours.

The restaurants served up dishes including coconut jhinga, Goan chicken cafreal and tikka masala and were praised by food critic Jay Rayner. The York restaurant had100 seats and opened in a building formerly occupied by Silvanos, which served residents for more than 35 years. Alison said the support shown to her by residents in Cumberland Street was heart-warming, adding: “I can’t wait to bring something totally different to the area.”
