A FORMER York woman is 100 years young today.

Annie Waterworth (nee Humphrey), who was born in Wharram Percy, near Malton, embarked on nursing training at the old York County Hospital in 1937 and subsequently worked at the Military Hospital in Fulford, Deighton Grove and Poppleton Gate, rising to the rank of matron.

In 1942, Annie married Harry (also known as Dick) Waterworth, who was a York City player in the early 1900s and later worked in Rowntree’s Transport Department.

He was almost 30 years Annie’s senior and she gained a stepson, Derek, on her marriage - the couple later had a daughter Sue.

Annie retired in 1976 when Dick became ill. He died in 1980.

She moved into Joseph Rowntree sheltered housing at Mistral Court in 1992 and then to Surrey, to live with her daughter, in 2016.

Sue said her mum still bakes, crafts and plays the piano and has even taught the local librarian to crochet since she arrived in Surrey.

She only gave up driving after the move.

She said Annie’s zest for life and “a couple of glasses of red wine and five ciggies every day” was the secret to her longevity.
