The Press's Fund Our Force campaign has won York MP Hugh Bayley a top-level meeting with Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to discuss North Yorkshire Police's possible budget cuts.

Mr Bayley presented the 1,000-signature petition on the floor of the House of Commons.

And, after speaking briefly to Mrs Smith, he has now secured a full meeting with her to discuss the budget proposals.

Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell has warned the proposed cut of up to £10 million would be "devastating" to the force. After speaking to the Home Secretary briefly, Mr Bayley insists the budget will not be cut by that much.

Nevertheless, any sort of reduction would be a cut too far.

Mr Bayley will hand our petition to the Home Secretary at his meeting with her.

She must listen up.
