Knowing the offside rule and acting cool in front of their friends are high on the list for today's children when describing what makes a 'super mum'.

Ahead of Mother’s Day, a York jeweller has revealed a list of 'dos and don'ts', with giving cuddles when kids are sad topping the list for four to 11-year-olds.

Another super mum trait includes being able to fix anything around the house.

The research by Beaverbrooks in Browns also showed that York children also valued cake baking, knowing what to say when they are upset, and doing good voices for bedtime stories.

And it seems the way to a child’s heart is still through their stomach, with making their favourite food, setting up midnight feasts and always having snacks in her handbag also making the cut.

Lisa Tynas, store manager at York, said: “For 100 years, Beaverbrooks has been privileged to play a role in our customers’ most special occasions, and with Mother’s Day fast approaching, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to find out what the younger generation really think of the most important women in their lives.

"It’s great to see what our kids really think, with our research revealing 94 per cent of children say they have a Super Mum!"

The study found that making them laugh and spending a lot of time with them are also Super Mum traits, along with never picking them up late for school, being good at dancing, and smelling really nice.

The research also revealed a list of the most embarrassing things York mums can do according to their kids.

Kissing them in front of their friends is the most cringe-worthy thing, according to 25 percent of children, while 23 percent roll their eyes at their mum’s terrible singing.

More than a fifth (21 percent) loathe getting their face wiped in front of people and 22 per cent are embarrassed when their mum tells them off in public.

According to the survey, 17 per cent hate it when she tries to floss and can’t, and 14 per cent blush because of their mum’s road rage.

14 per cent said they can’t stand it when their mum treats them like a baby and the same amount said being asked if they need the loo in front of other people is the height of embarrassment.

Despite causing a lot of humiliation, mums must be doing something right as more than nine out of 10 (94 per cent) believed their mum to be a Super Mum.

In fact, some 77 per cent think their mum is cooler than their dad, 60 per cent think she gives better hugs than him and almost three quarters (73 per cent) would prefer mum to look after them when they are sick.

The study also explored what kids wish their mums would let them do, with 41 per cent wanting to be allowed to eat more sweets, 35 percent craving more screen time, and 39 percent longing for a later bedtime.

32 per cent wanted mum to let them stay off school, 29 percent wished they were allowed to sleep in her bed, and 23 percent would love her to give them their own mobile phone.

The number one thing children and mums argue about is bedtime, according to the study, with 40 per cent saying it causes the most tension.

On top of this, 36 per cent of kids say they argue when their mum wants them to do something they don’t want to, while 34 per cent disagree over how much screen time they are allowed.

In fact, 60 per cent said mum is the parent who tells them off the most.

Despite the clashes, 90 per cent of children said they will take the time to make a card for Mother’s Day, while 72 percent are going to get dad to help them choose the perfect present.

When asked what they’d give their mum for Mother’s Day if they could choose anything in the world, most kids said a massive box of chocolates (17 percent), closely followed by a big holiday (15 percent) and a new house (14 percent). 13 percent would love to give her a puppy, 5 percent a diamond ring, and 4 percent a necklace.
